J. Michael Turner Jr.,  Attorney

Bio

Michael Turner is the Managing Partner of Michael Turner Family Law & Divorce, LLC.

Mr. Turner graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1999 and went on to earn his law degree from Samford University, Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham, Alabama.

A lifelong resident of the Upstate, Mr. Turner grew up in Laurens, South Carolina, and is a second-generation attorney. His father, J. Michael “Mike” Turner, Sr. recently retired after practicing law for nearly 50 years. Additionally, Mr. Turner’s brother, The Honorable Matthew P. Turner, is a Family Court Judge for the Eighth Circuit in the Upstate of South Carolina. Judge Turner was recently elected to the South Carolina Court of Appeals.

In 2010 Mr. Turner began practicing exclusively family law and in 2016 began working as Lead Litigator for one of the largest family law and divorce litigation firms in the United States. He was a leader in that firm, serving as a mentor to other attorneys nationwide, and participating in numerous classes and mock trials.

Since starting his own firm, Mr. Turner is able to better control the quantity and quality of cases he handles so that he can provide the best service and representation to each client. Michael practices exclusively in the Family Court where he aggressively advocates for his clients whether it be a complex litigation, high conflict custody issue that needs to go to trial, or a situation in which the parties can go to mediation and work toward an agreement.

Since 2018 Mr. Turner has served on the South Carolina Judicial Qualifications Committee, a committee that screens potential judges as they go through the process of becoming a judge or renewing their judgeship. In 2022 Mr. Turner was voted one of South Carolina’s “Legal Elite” attorneys, a special honor, as it is an award voted on by fellow attorneys.

Mr. Turner and his wife live in Simpsonville, South Carolina. They have twin teenage daughters and several dogs, all of whom keep them very busy. In their free time, Mr. Turner and his family enjoy being outdoors and traveling.

Excerpt from South Carolina Lawyer Weekly:

Michael Turner understands the complexity and emotional aspects of practicing family law, and he can’t imagine doing anything else. He is a second-generation attorney whose father, J. Michael Turner Sr., recently retired after practicing law for nearly 50 years.

“There is no better place to make an impact in someone’s life than by protecting their children, their assets and their sanity, he says. Knowing his clients appreciate his efforts is among his greatest rewards. “I proactively make my clients aware of the status and next steps of their cases,” he says. “They appreciate being well-in-formed and it helps to manage expectations throughout litigation.”

Last March, after practicing law for 23 years, Turner launched his firm, Turner Family Law & Divorce, and he considers this as his top professional accomplishment. “Being able to control the quality and quantity of clients I represent has allowed me to focus on high-conflict cases and complex litigation,” he says.
